Neighbourhood Watch News Spring 2006

After a good run of receiving crime figures for Lady Bay (I May 2005 to 8 January 2006) there developed what is euphemistically known as 'technical problems' It took until mid March before we received figures for the rest of January. Somewhat disturbing one reported crime was designated as 'possession of weapons'.

By 19 March we had received no further crime figures from official sources but, via an unofficial route, I managed to obtain a list. There were 24 reported crimes between 30.1.07 and 18.3.06. They are posted on the NW noticeboard on B & H Newsagents shop on Trent Boulevard The main point about the latter period is two incidents of thieves simply walking in to unlocked houses and stealing property. Possessions were also stolen from cars including four having bonnets jumped on and dented, wing mirrors ripped off and hub caps stolen. Two cars were stolen. Altogether a bad pehod for the area.

You can view the crime figures on www.rushcliffecommunitywatch.co.uk and click on Rushcliffe Crime Information. They are catching up with the backlog.

The West Bridgford Neighbourhood Watch stall appears at the Farmer's Market events on Central Avenue on the fourth Saturday in the month. Security products including shed alarms are on sale and lots of advice on crime and security We want to get more NW co-ordinators and if you are interested in becoming a co-ordinator, telephone me on 0115 9820996.

There are no more Data Link kits. The scheme was launched in West Bridgford by Kenneth Clarke in April 2002 and thousands of kits have been given away throughout the county. However 'Son of Data Link' - the 'Next of Kin Card', is in plentiful supply. A handy card for pocket, wallet, handbag and car glove compartment it provides a name and phone number of who you would wish to be contacted in case of emergency The cards are free.

Anyone who has been grossly overcharged by BT for premium rate telephone calls they have not made should pursue the matter through the small claims court. I did when BT added an extra £433 on to a bill in 2004 and demanded payment with threats of cutting off my phone and taking me to court. I took THEM to court and the matter reached the point that the bailiffs were due to be sent in. I had visions of my claiming the chairman's desk! Out of the blue on 22 March a man travelled from London and presented me with a cheque for the full amount due (plus court costs). I could have claimed interest but was too pleased to be reimbursed the over-payment. David can fight Goliath and win. There are some 80,000 victims of this fraud.

A device called 'Mosquito' which irritates youths congregating in shopping precincts, etc. and emits a high pitched noise inaudible to adults (really) has been banned from use by a council on the grounds that 'it may infringe human rights'. No mention of the local residents plagued by having their human rights infringed by unruly gangs of youths.

REMEMBER • LOCK IT OR LOSE IT, STAY 2 STEPS AHEAD OF CRIMINALS AND HELP STAMP OUT CRIME IN LADY BAY

There is to be a DEMONSTRATION OF SECURITY FOR SHEDS by the Police on SATURDAY, 6MAY in the Lady Bay Pub Car Park, starting at 2 pm    West Bridgford Neighbourhood Watch will also have a stall.
