Don Read's Crime Column

Reported crime in Lady Bay is down. In the six weeks commencing 25.6.07 there were 9 reported crimes or 1.5 per week. In 2006 there was one week when there were 12 reported crimes (w/e 8.1.06). By comparison with other years 2002 had an average weekly crime figure of 6.22 and 2003 the figure was 6.38. Note: the police include Edward, Crosby and Radcliffe Road in Lady Bay, I do not. Just the 'island'.

Much of this decline in crime is due to the promotion of SmartWater and the many signs which adorn our lamp posts act as a deterrent to potential burglars. There are still too many thefts from cars, due to items being left on view. Criminal damage to vehicles, against which there is little defence, is still with us, There were two raids on premises where cannabis was being grown. Householders do appear to be heeding police warnings to intensify security.

There is a little less litter on the roads of Lady Bay since a team of Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators took up their Litter grabbers (courtesy of RBC's Streetwise Dept) and set about picking up the detritus strewn about our roads by inconsiderate people, The amount of beer cans, fish and chip containers, sweet wrappers and cigarette packets carelessly disposed of suggests that the culprits are oblivious of the fact that there are financial penalties for dropping litter. But then where are the law enforcers at 11 pm on a Friday night? The police cannot be everywhere at any given time. At the risk of being labelled eccentric you could join us by calling the Streetwise Dept. at Rushcliffe Borough Council and ask for a Litter Grabber. They are generally free. I have a couple going spare. Parish Councils throughout the country promote litter picking - why not Lady Bay?

After persistent pressure on Powergen over several years by local residents, the mighty company has finally painted the doors of their substations on Pierrepont Road and Adbolton Lane (near completion).

It is over twenty years since the last coat of paint was applied The trial of No Cold Calling Zones is reported in the national press to have been a success and doorstop crime has fallen in those designated areas. We have them on Holme Road and Adbolton Grove. Have any residents noticed a drop in cold callers?

The appalling assault on two innocent men in Edwalton who confronted a gang of around thirty youths after their vehicles were vandalized, illustrates the ferocity to which some bored youngsters will pursue their belief that they are just 'having a laugh' when they cause mayhem. All the conferences, meetings, pontifications are no substitute for the remedy most older people would advocate. DISCIPLINE.

The Neighbourhood Watch stall is present at the Farmers Market on Central Avenue every fourth week - 13 October, 10 November. SmartWater can be ordered through the police via John Lennard on 07982130405.
