A member of the public in the Rushcliffe area was recently cold-called by an intruder alarm company from the Derbyshire area. The company attempted to sell an alarm system by saying that they had four free systems allocated for Rushcliffe Borough so the householder would not have to pay for the alarm - only for the installation and monitoring costs. The caller added that the police do not respond to "bells only" system activations. The householder found this approach suspicious and did not agree to further contact.
The company in question is not recognised by either of the accepted validating bodies - NSI or SSAIB. The company's publicity refers to NACOSS, which is an obsolete body.
Nottinghamshire Police wish to make it clear that we DO respond to any burglar alarm activation of which we are informed provided that there are reasons to believe that an offender has gained entry or is about to do so. We recommend that, when householders are interested in the installation of intruder alarms, they should seek at least three quotes from reputable companies (i.e. those recognised by NSI or SSAIB). Such companies do not "cold-call" nor do they pressure people into signing contracts on the doorstep.
